The man who wasn’t there

A cousin told me about this interesting quote in context of a topic we were discussing. So I googled for it. Thought I’d share the same.

As I was walking up the stair
I met a man who wasn’t there.
He wasn’t there again today.
I wish, I wish he’d stay away.

Attributed to Hughes Mearns (1875 – 1965) in the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations (9th ed.). My source is The Poetry Archives@eMule.com.
